Suzhou: A City of One Hundred Museums

Many of the foreign friends like visiting museums in their spare time. In recent years, Suzhou has built a variety of museums including different kinds of art galleries and memorial halls, so the exhibition fans in Suzhou will have more destinations to explore. 

Suzhou held a press conference at Jinji Lake International Convention Centre this afternoon (January 26). During the conference, some special awards were made public including the most characteristic award for the museum industry in Suzhou and the honorary title of “Top 10 Volunteers” and the brand of “A City of One Hundred Museums” was officially launched.

The number of museums in Suzhou continues to increase. The city has built more than 50 new museums since 2012, bringing the city’s total to 102. Among them, 74 are state-owned and the rest 28 are not. Besides, 44 museums in Suzhou were registered at Jiangsu provincial-level cultural heritage administration.

There has been a notable improvement on quality of development. Suzhou now owns nine national-level museums: two are recognized as first-grade, six as second-grade and one as third-grade.

The efforts to activate the culture and museum resources in Suzhou have produced initial results. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), the museums registered in Suzhou hosted over 100 exhibitions, held up to 1,000 sessions of educational events and served nearly 10 million visitors annually on average, which has achieved good social effects.

In doing this, Suzhou has seen a relatively perfect cultural ecosystem and industrial chain gradually come into being. The cultural organizations and museums in Suzhou developed an average of 180 cultural and creative products per year, with the annual sales figure hitting RMB19.43 million yuan. Suzhou has also taken proactive measures to integrate cultural elements into tourism and design such innovative products as museum night tour and museum theme theater.

Suzhou will put into practice the three-year action plan to create the brand of Jiangnan Culture and make the brand popular through optimizing the overall layout of museums in Suzhou, exploring a new museum-establishing model where the museum is not state-owned, fully drawing on the potential of culture and museum economy, etc.
