Time to try special Suzhou wine as Winter Solstice coming

This year’s Winter Solstice will arrive in two weeks on December 22. According to local ancient calendar, Winter Solstice marks the beginning of New Year, therefore the locals attach great importance to this day, especially the night before it. A must-have drink for Winter Solstice’s Eve, Winter Wine, or Dongniangjiu, is available from today.

Winter Wine, formerly known as Dongyang Wine, is made from the glutinous rice grown in the Taihu Lake area. It is low in alcohol as its ABV is usually below 5 percent. With osmanthus flowers added, the wine has a special sweet taste. It is only brewed once a year, and only available for one month.

It is known that the wine is still priced at 5.2 yuan per 500 ml though the cost of its ingredients rises. You can purchase it at the shops of Yuandachang (元大昌) across the city. Remember to put it in the refrigerator and finish it as soon as possible.
